Brian Chan from Bchanx.com has re-created a few company logo designs, using only CSS. Brian mentions here, the possible benefits of css only logos, such as crisp image quality when scaled to various sizes (responsive design). He also mentions some of the downsides, like non modern browser issues.
My markup/coding skills are limited so I’m not going to comment on whether or not css logo recreations are a sensible route to take for web design, but the idea and implementation sure is cool.
